In Ubuntu MATE (or any old GNOME style desktop) go to &lt;b&gt;System &gt; Preferences &gt; Personal &gt; Startup Applications&lt;/b&gt; and scroll down to find the &lt;b&gt;Update Notifier&lt;/b&gt;. Uncheck the box. Next time you log in, there shouldn't be any popups about updates.</div>
